GEORGE TOWN: Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer caused a stir when he tried to hijack a press conference called by Bukit Gelugor Barisan Nasional co-ordinator Datuk Koay Kar Huah.

The press conference, held in Jalan Gangsa, Island Glades, was to protest against an illegal telecommunications tower by the road.

Rayer, who arrived about 30 minutes before Koay, informed the residents that the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) had already issued a notice on Nov 25 for the tower to be removed.

When Koay arrived together with Loh Nam Hooi and Loke Poh Chye, who are Barisan Nasional co-ordinators for Seri Delima and Pengkalan Kota respectively, a brief commotion ensued and verbal blows were traded.

Rayer said that during the previous state government’s rule, telecommunication towers mushroomed on the island.

Koay, who is also Penang MCA adviser, rebuked him, saying that he should focus on the present situation instead.

Rayer then left with an assistant, after reassuring the residents that he would come back for a gotong royong at the place.

I’ll personally help to take down the illegal structure if it is not removed within three days,” he said.

Koay then challenged Rayer to resign as assemblyman if the structure was still standing after three days.

He also slammed the state government for failing to prevent the telecommunications tower from being built against regulations.

“PDC Telecommunication Services Sdn Bhd (PDC Telco), which built the tower, is a subsidiary of the Penang Development Corporation chaired by the Chief Minister.

“How can a government body go against the law, only to have another (MPPP) clean up the mess?” he asked.

Koay said the situation became worse after Pakatan took over the state government, adding that previously, such towers were only found on rooftops, built illegally by private companies.

“Now these towers are put up by an arm of the state government, and on government land to boot.”

One structure is located in Lorong Delima, Taman Gembira, while a smaller tower sits on the rooftop of a pharmacy in Jalan Delima.
