Illegal telco towers set up

TWO illegal telecommunication structures have been illegally erected in Island Glades in Penang despite the state government’s strict regulation on approval.

Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer said one of the structures was erected during the recent Hari Raya Haji public holiday, while another one was done on a Sunday.

“No one was consulted by the telecommunications company on its plans to set up the structures, one is by the roadside in Jalan Gangsa and the other on the rooftop of a pharmacy in Jalan Delima.

“I immediately checked with the Penang Municipal Council about the structures and was told that they were illegal,” he said.

It was recently reported that the state government had extended the deadline set for telecommunication companies to regularise their structures to the end of the year from the initial June 30 deadline.

Rayer added that Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had instructed that assemblymen must be informed of whatever works about to be carried out by companies at any constituencies.

“It could be the setting up of such structures or turning roads into one or two-way streets, the assemblyman of the area must be notified.

“This is to ensure that the assemblyman of the constituency can get feedback from the residents and go on a fact finding mission,” he added.

Rayer said after complaining, the council told him that the structures would be dismantled very soon.

“I was even told that the work to erect the structures was done at night, so that the authorities would not know.”
