Towers Of Death

You are in danger, while VVIPs are safe. Mumbaikars are being exposed to dangerously high levels of radiations, thanks to too many cellphone towers in the city.

Thursday, June 03, 2010:

Just a couple of months after the discovery of radioactive material in the Mayapuri industrial area of West Delhi, another radiation threat is making headlines in India. Mumbai’s residential areas, schools, hospitals and markets are found to be highly unsafe, thanks to too many cellphone towers in the city leading to higher emission of electromagnetic radiations (EMR), way beyond safety levels.

The safe limit of radiations for human beings is 600 milliwatt/metre square (mW/msq). But according to a Headlines Today report, many residential areas in Mumbai have EMR levels crossing 4,000 mW/msq.

Even religious places in the city are not safe. The Siddhivinayak Temple, Sri Swaminarayan Bhawan, Infant Jesus Church and Sri Sri Dham Temple have dangerously high exposure to EMR.

Hospitals in Mumbai are also in the grip of the ‘slow and invisible killer’. The radiation readings in six of the eight hospitals surveyed (Bombay Hospital, Jaslok Hospital, Breach Candy Hospital, Lilavati Hospital, Nair Hospital and S.L. Raheja Hospital) were more than 4,000 mW/msq.

Mumbai has witnessed a spurt in the number of cell phone towers in the recent past exposing people to dangerously high levels of radiations. Only some parts of the city are safe and those are areas where VVIPs live. According to the report, the VVIP areas, such as the Mantralaya, the Congress Bhawan or the chief minister's residence at Malabar Hills, are safe.

The state government is now seeking a report on the threat of EMR from phone towers in Mumbai. India Today quoted chief minister Ashok Chavan as saying, "If the towers are found to be hazardous to health, the issue will be attended to."

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) also recently proposed radiation exposure limits for mobile phone towers.

The most common problems associated with cell phone radiations are loss of appetite, irritation, fatigue, sleep disorders, difficulty in concentrating, headaches, problems in vision and infertility.

You may have also experienced some symptoms like irritation or a headache when you talk on your mobile for long periods of time. But when it comes to cell phone towers, the radiation levels emitted are much more. This is because, in contrast to mobile phones, it is emitted continuously and is more powerful at close quarters.
